Genre- a category of media
Conventions- the things that make up a genre- editing, mis en scene, sound
Editing- choosing what clips to put together for the desired effect
Mis en scene- what makes the scene (people, props, setting, weather)
Horror Films= whispers, scraggly costumes, jump scares, red/blue lighting, (a lack of light )= low key lighting, suspenseful atmosphere/music (scary), ghosts, forests, abandoned places, screams, eerie, lack of dialogue, blood, knives, large creepy house, kids toys, child loss/ evil children, hammer, axe, weapons- not usually guns
The 'Monster'
Low Key lighting
Isolated Setting
Jump Scare
POV
Exaggerated Sounds
Handheld camera
The unfamiliar/unknown
'Found' footage
Vulnerability
Fear of children/the elderly
Dark colours (reds/blacks)
IT FOLLOWS
Sound= Dynamic (quiet to loud)
a build up of the intensity of sound- building tension
soundtrack= rhythmic & bass - represent/signifies heartbeat- audience can use fear to relate
beginning quiet dialogue to then intense sound shows contrast
definite intense fast pace soundtrack (ugly loud drums, unconventional noisy mechanical sound effects
Lighting= washed out
(desaturated colour) = gloomy atmosphere constructed
artificial lighting instead of the natural light form windows- makes it seem less happy
shadows in the hallway due to lack of lighting (low key lighting)- makes you focus on the light/shadows
Mis en Scene
costume/clothing= dull/ muted which creates a gloomy atmosphere
paper/ pen props= more realistic of schools
she's sitting alone/ is a loner
Autumn= orange, colder, darker, Halloween- spooky
old lady= creepy because its out of place, old people are closer to death, appearance is saggier=creepy
this is a binary opposition- where two things that don't belong with each other are put together eg old lady in hospital gown in a school hallway
Cinematography
the camera is panning (moving right to left in the scene, whilst the camera itself stays still) to show how dull/normal/mundane the setting is
mid shot
then cut to a slow zoom, keeps cutting back and forth
tracking shot- camera follows the subject - makes us think somethings going to happen but we cant see what
