"analyse the concepts of 'genre' in your own media product you have studied"- 6 MARKS
As the clip begins we see a young lady sitting in class and there is a lecturer or teacher presenting in the background. This allows us to see she's in a educational setting. The camera pans around the room and then back to the girl showing that she's the main character/focus. The background music changes and the camera focuses on an old lady outside the window. The teachers voice is drowned out by the background sound which increasingly becomes more metallic and industrial-like. This part of the clip is very suspenseful as the camera switches from a zoom of the old lady, back to the girl and then to the old lady again. At this point, the music gets a little bit quieter which builds up tension until the girl hastily leaves her class. The camera then zooms into a boys reaction but you can still hear the girl leave, which makes us wonder who he is. In the hallway, low key lighting is used which highlights the girls expressions and panic. This part is quite fast paced to replicate how she is feeling and to also make the audience feel the same.
As it is a school, the old lady being there shows binary opposition; she should be in a hospital (due to her outfit). The colour used throughout is very desaturated which adds to the suspenseful feel. Old ladies shouldn't be in schools which therefore adds to the spooky factor. In this clip there is also a lack of dialogue which many would find odd. This shows 'It Follows' is a horror as these elements are all very common. The different camera shots (that were often slow) are built up by the dynamic sounds that then make it seem quick paced.
