Analyse the trailer
How does the trailer for The Dark Knight use film form to promote the movie and appeal to its target audience? [20 marks]
The trailer for The Dark Knight establishes a mature tone which then appeals to a more adult oriented audience. This can be shown in the quick cut shots done with a range of camera, specifically in the dynamic car chase that has lots of explosions. A technique used in this is low key lighting. As this is an action scene, high stakes are created. Batman as the archetypal character in Propp's Narrative design going against the villains and struggling really creates those stakes and tension. The explosions are synonymous to the superhero action genre and instantly grab the attention of the audience as high feeling of danger is established throughout. These special effects and high stakes show a much more mature tone which therefore appeals to more adult audiences and allows it to stand out.
The trailer also is edited in a fast paced way that flows by using l and j cuts. An example of this is when Harvey Dent is speaking and it cuts to when he turns into two-face. This piece of sound is carried through the two shots and they would appeal to an audience who know the comics as it shows the downfall of the archetypal false hero. The phrase 'you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain' intrigues the audience and generates tension and excitement as it foreshadows what could happen. The transition between shots shows Harvey Dent when he has become villainous and by doing this briefly some might not catch it until they watch the film. Therefore promoting the movie through its editing which intrigues the target audience.
Another thing that shows the Dark Knight is being targeted to a more mature audience is through sound, more specifically the backing track to the trailer. Throughout, the sound goes from loud to quiet which is effective in creating tension and suspense in the audience. Younger viewers might not be as interested in this as it could make them feel scared but the desired effect for adults is excitement. These big moments of sound are built up and made more powerful by the silence as it creates an opportunity for people to sit on the edge and think about what could happen next. Making it not suitable to a young audience which could attract adults as they know the themes are more mature.
