Mainstream Vs. Niche: What’s the difference?
If a media product is said to have a mainstream or mass audience appeal then it appeals to wide array of people. Blockbuster films or AAA video games are distributed by large conglomerates (As discussed in LO1), and turn a large profit or command a large number of viewers.
Niche markets tend to be more specific, and targeted at particular interests, skills or beliefs. This might be media products that are not very well known but have a strong following (achieving a cult status). Because of the stronger and more passionate following, they can still turn a profit.
They are also valued as a way to appeal to a company's ideal audience.
